🍸 The Bartender Who Became Colorado Springs' Tax Hero
💡 What she overheard at the bar started a 40-year mission
Back in 1982, Laurie Nemeth was bartending in the Bay Area in California. Numbers always came easy to her, and as customers nursed their drinks and complained about tax bills, she'd lean across the bar with unexpected advice. "That new car you bought? Tax deduction. Those medical expenses? Deductible too." Their shocked faces told her everything. These hardworking people had no idea they were leaving money on the table every April.
That revelation sparked a career change that would span four decades. Her deep financial expertise is built on a career that includes high-level corporate auditing and serving as a Certified Municipal Finance Officer (CFO), cleaning up books for entire municipalities back east. She eventually launched her own practice to bring this wealth of experience directly to our community.
In 2010, she followed her military son to Colorado Springs, establishing her firm in the Widefield/Security area. Here, she quickly saw that her neighbors, especially seniors and military families, were struggling with complex tax laws and needed an affordable, trustworthy guide. Her purpose became clear: to serve the community she now called home.
Laurie discovered a heartbreaking reality: many seniors were being taxed up to 85% on their Social Security. It wasn't just a number on a form; it was their livelihood. Her response was immediate, slashing her fees to offer discounts to seniors and significant breaks for military members. This dedication runs deep; she has continued serving clients even while navigating her own personal health battle. For Laurie, it’s about providing guidance through life’s toughest financial challenges.
Laurie's approach is rooted in education. She gives clients "homework" to uncover every possible deduction, from medical mileage to energy credits for new windows. This commitment has built relationships that span generations and state lines. With free consultations and a website full of resources, she empowers everyone to understand their finances, reinforcing her core belief that "Clients Matter."
For expert guidance with a personal touch, visit Laurie's Bookkeeping & Tax Service at 76 Widefield Boulevard. Explore FREE resources and learn more on her website or email [email protected].

☎️ Spoofed Calls Target COS Seniors

With Medicare open enrollment underway, some Colorado Springs residents are facing an unsettling increase in scam phone calls — often several a day. These callers may sound professional and friendly, but they’re not from Medicare. They’re fraudsters hoping to catch seniors off guard, using fake names and spoofed phone numbers to sound legitimate.
One local senior said he’s received calls from numbers that even appear as familiar businesses — or worse, show up on caller ID as “U.S. Army,” giving him false hope it was a family member. Many of these scammers start with lines like “I’m from Medicare” or “Let me verify your information,” but don’t be fooled. If you didn’t initiate the contact, hang up.
Remember, real Medicare reps will never call you unless you've contacted them first. If you have questions about your plan or need trusted guidance during this year’s open enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7), the safest step is to call Medicare directly at 1-800-633-4227 — they're available 24/7. Full Story
🗳️ Nov 4: School Board Races Are On the Ballot

Election Day is Nov 4—it’s officially too late to mail in your ballot. You’ll need to find a secure drop box or visit a voter service and polling center to make your vote count.
This year’s election focuses on local school board races, and several districts across Southern Colorado—including D11, D20, D49, and others—are electing new board members. These positions have a direct impact on the direction of our local schools, so it’s worth taking a moment to get to know who’s on your ballot. A curated list of candidate profiles is available to help you make an informed decision, with links to each district’s page and responses from candidates who replied to a shared questionnaire.
There are 41 drop box locations across El Paso County, and multiple in-person voting centers including spots at UCCS, Pikes Peak State College (both campuses), Colorado College, Fort Carson, Falcon, Fountain, and Monument. Cast your ballot before 7pm on Election Day, Nov 4! Full Story
🛑 4 Weeks, No Pay, No Deal

As the government shutdown reaches Day 29, the Senate has once again failed to pass a funding bill. While military pay may be temporarily covered, other federal employees, including air traffic controllers, are working without pay—causing stress, financial hardship, and growing absenteeism. SNAP benefits are also at risk, with over 42 million Americans facing food insecurity if funding isn’t secured by this weekend. The effects are rippling across the country, and right here in Colorado Springs, many local families are caught in the middle. Full Story
