π Everyone Belongs Here - The Arc Pikes Peak Region
For nearly 70 years, The Arc Pikes Peak Region has been a quiet but fierce defender of the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) right here in our community. While they may not make headlines every week, the work they do changes lives and they do it all free of charge.
IDD is a broad term for conditions like Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, and other disabilities that affect intellectual or developmental functioning. People with IDD are our neighbors, our family members, our fellow community members and they deserve the same rights, respect, and opportunities as everyone else. That's exactly what The Arc fights for.
πΌ What The Arc Pikes Peak Region Does
Advocacy Program: Three types of free advocacy: educational (IEP/504 meetings), adult (navigating systems and benefits), and judicial (courts and criminal justice). If someone with IDD needs a voice, The Arc shows up.
Guardianship Program: When the Probate Court appoints The Arc as legal guardian, their trained staff steps in to protect the individual's wellbeing and rights.
Parent Empowerment: Monthly workshops, guest speakers, and a community of parents who truly "get it." No one should have to figure this out alone.
Public Policy: They track state and federal legislation affecting people with IDD. When bills come up that could impact the community, The Arc is watching and speaking up.
Include U.S.A. Self-Advocacy: Adults 18+ with IDD learning to advocate for themselves and their rights. This group doesn't just accept inclusion, they demand it.
Social Events: Family-friendly and 18+ events all year long, because community and connection matter just as much as rights.
π Why This Matters to Our Community
The Arc PPR receives no federal funding. Everything they do (the free advocacy, the workshops, the events) runs on donations, memberships, and the dedication of their team and volunteers. They're part of a national network of more than 140,000 members and 600+ chapters, but the work in our community depends entirely on us.
