👩🎨 How Concrete Couch is Building Community
Where others saw a concrete dumping ground, the Concrete Couch saw possibility. Today, that forgotten corner at 1100 S Royer St. has become an 8-acre park where strangers become lifelong friends through shared creativity.
Since 2003, the Concrete Couch organization has operated on a simple but powerful belief: junk is just raw material waiting for an idea, and getting a little dirty alongside your neighbors is liberating. What started as scattered public art projects has blossomed into the vibrant Concrete Coyote Community Park and public artworks throughout Colorado Springs.
Their reach extends far beyond the park's gates. The Sam Dunlap Wall of Inspiration mural at the intersection of Fountain Blvd and Circle Dr, celebrates community heroes through interviews and artwork created by kids and adults working side-by-side under expert guidance. Colorful art panels now brighten the historic Coyote tunnels (at the end of Shooks Run), which celebrate our community's heritage and dedication to protecting natural resources. Because of this hands-on philosophy, everyday people across the city are turning scrap materials into stunning public art.
At the park itself, there's always something happening. Weekly jam sessions fill the air with music while poetry nights give voice to local artists. Monthly Sustainability Skillshares teach everything from cooking to mosaic-making. Throughout the year, they host festivals, free summer camps, community celebrations, and countless workshops, proving there's never a wrong time to jump in.
"We build community through creative projects," shares Thomas Pantoja, Community Integration Manager. "We all have to come together because we are still neighbors."
Ultimately, the Concrete Couch proves that community isn't just something you find, it's something you build together, often with hands covered in paint, clay, and shared purpose.
