π Is the City Actually Winning?

Good news for anyone watching the homelessness challenge unfold in Colorado Springs. In a press release yesterday, Mayor Yemi announced the updates since launching a Citywide Homelessness Response Team pulling together 15 city departments, and they're reporting real progress: 59% of the 61-item Homelessness Response Action Plan is complete, with another 25% underway.
Finished work includes expanding the Sit/Lie ordinance, running a HOT team in the commercial district 6 days a week, raising $860,000 for winter shelter capacity, and pushing nearly 3,000 affordable units into the development pipeline. The team meets regularly to share data and set shared standards across departments.
If you've been skeptical that city-level coordination can move the needle, the early signs suggest it's worth watching as we head into fall. Is it perfect, of course notβ¦it is progress? I say yes. π

If the CDC's cyclospora outbreak has you nervous about fresh produce, a Colorado Springs farm is worth knowing about. Emerge Aquaponics (4135 Shoup Rd) grows 18,000 heads of lettuce a month indoors under controlled conditions, and they're selling out by 11am every market day.
Their system uses tilapia for natural nutrients and UV filtration, requiring 90% less water and 75% less energy than traditional farming. Red Oakleaf and Romaine varieties go from seed to harvest in 8 weeks, and you know exactly where your food came from.
The nationwide cyclospora outbreak, linked to fresh produce and affecting more than 24,000 people, is driving more customers toward controlled-environment growers. Emerge supplies local restaurants, Colorado College, Springs Rescue Mission, and Crossfire. Full Story
π» Twice as Many Bears, Here's Why

Bear reports across Colorado are nearly double what they were at this point last year. Colorado Parks and Wildlife received 5,197 bear reports in 2026 compared to 2,853 in the same period of 2025.
The reason is fire and drought. Wildfires and dry conditions have stripped natural food sources and water, pushing bears and other wildlife into neighborhoods in search of both. Human trash is a major draw.
CPW's reminders: secure trash and anything with a strong smell, keep dogs leashed, respect area closures, don't feed wildlife, and report sick animals to your local CPW office. The agency is also working on habitat restoration in post-wildfire areas.

Yesterday we spotlighted Jake & Telly's Greek Market. Their restaurant itself is a Colorado Springs landmark where everything on the menu reflects generations of tradition. Their Yia-Yia Maria's Spanakopita is a classic: crispy, golden phyllo filled with spinach and feta, baked the way it's been made in their Greek kitchen for decades and now YOU get the recipe.
