📰 Stories from this week in Colorado Springs!

Here are some of the stories we shared this week. Check out any of the issues you may have missed!

  • 👀 El Paso County Watches Denver's Migrant Challenges -

El Paso County, including Colorado Springs, is closely watching the migrant situation unfolding in Denver as leaders advocate for congressional support. While Denver has spent over $38 million to aid migrants, El Paso County has not allocated funds. Mayor-elect Yemi Mobalade emphasizes no intention of making the city a sanctuary. The Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management is actively monitoring the situation, staying in contact with Denver officials, and preparing for potential developments. (Issue #24-022)

  • 🛍️ Downtown Dilemma: Retailers Seek Local Love ❤️ -Downtown Colorado Springs retail businesses face challenges, with City Council urging local support. A recent fire on Bijou Street prolongs closures, and the Downtown Partnership notes a 4% sales drop through October. Late-year incidents, including fires and power outages, contributed to setbacks, along with inflation and increased costs. Despite challenges, optimism surrounds expectations for improvement in the coming year, however, if it’s possible for the community to make it a point to patron these downtown businesses, it would really help.  Crowning Glory: Air Force Grad Wins Miss America 2024 (Issue #24-024)

  • 🏭 Quietly Dismantling: CSU's Stacks - Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) has embarked on the phased demolition of Martin Drake Power Plant's iconic stacks. Commencing with one stack, the utility ensures meticulous abatement measures to safeguard the environment and neighboring communities. The gradual process aims to minimize dust and noise impact. By the end of March, two stacks are slated for complete removal, with the third, attached to the old main Drake building, to follow later in the year. Additional structures linked to the power plant are scheduled for demolition by the conclusion of 2024, reflecting CSU's commitment to responsible and community-conscious decommissioning. (Issue #24-025)

  • 🆘 Urgent Pantry Plea: Need Help Now - Colorado Springs food pantries, like Solid Rock, face a shortage of donations post-holiday season. Despite high demand, the dwindling supply challenges staff to meet the usual two-day provisions, providing only a day's worth. With a decline in post-holiday contributions, individuals relying on these services find themselves navigating multiple pantries to sustain their weekly meals. As available food is expected to diminish by this morning, the community is urged to contribute and support Solid Rock's mission. • ♿Game-Changer for Parks Accessibility - Colorado Springs is enhancing park accessibility for all, focusing on inclusivity beyond ramps. Collaborative efforts by city departments have led to completed 2023 projects, like the Palmer Park playground transformation. In 2024, innovative improvements are planned, including at Rock Ledge Ranch and Westside Community Center. These projects aim to create an inclusive environment for all residents and visitors. Cold Strikes, Pipes Break: CSU Responds (Issue #24-026)
