πŸ”’ Government Shutdown: Plan + Resources

With the government shutdown now in effect, many families across Colorado Springs may soon find themselves without a paycheck. Whether you're a federal employee, contractor, or just feeling the ripple effects, this moment calls for calm planningβ€”not panic. ENT Credit Union recommends creating a basic financial survival plan focused on essentials and reaching out to creditors early to discuss options before bills are due. Full Story

πŸ™οΈ A Tiny Town with Big Magic

For a unique and affordable outing, the Michael Garman Museum and Gallery in Old Colorado City offers a truly magical experience. For just $6 to $10, visitors can step into β€œMagic Town,” a detailed miniature city that comes to life with mirrors, holograms, and shifting scenesβ€”crafted by late artist Michael Garman and now curated by his son.

From brownstones to back alleys, each visit offers something new, especially during seasonal makeovers like β€œSpooky Magic Town,” opened Sept 30. It’s a nostalgic, artful journey that celebrates everyday life through sculpture, storytelling, and immersive designβ€”right here in our own backyard. Full Story

πŸ¦‡ Beyond Spooky: Why Bats Matter in Colorado

As Halloween decorations go up and shadows stretch a little longer, it’s easy to get caught in the spooky myths surrounding bats. But here in Colorado, these nighttime flyers are more than folkloreβ€”they’re hardworking, insect-devouring, seed-spreading ecological heroes. With over 18 species in our state, including the ghostly Hoary Bat and the zig-zagging Canyon Bat, these winged wonders play a big role in keeping nature balanced.

This month, Wild Birds Unlimited is spotlighting them as part of our β€œSpooky Creatures of Colorado” seriesβ€”and you’re invited to celebrate them at a special Bat Day event this Sat, Oct 4th. From kid-friendly book readings to conservation talks, it’s time to give bats the appreciation they deserve.

🍲 Slow Cooker Eggplant Parmesan

Recipe by Allrecipes

β€œEasy and delish! I skipped over the first steps, and just went straight for the layering. I'm sure skipping over the whole frying process might have killed some of the flavor, but I couldn't tell, and it was much healthier sans the oil. I just cut my eggplant into slices, sprayed the crockpot with PAM (which I did after every layer of eggplant to make the breadcrumbs stick without using fat) and started layering. I baked on HIGH 3 hours (since my eggplant went in totally raw), and it was done just right.” ~Candice Fillingim
