✅ Shutdown Ends, But What’s Next?

After 43 days, the longest federal government shutdown in US history has officially ended. With the President signing the funding bill into law last night with Rep Jeff Crank voting in support of the funding bill.
However, Colorado’s senators opposed the measure due to the lack of renewed health care tax credits, which help nearly 300,000 Coloradans afford insurance. Without action, counties like El Paso and Teller could see health insurance premiums nearly double. Governor Polis is urging Congress to extend those credits and support programs like SNAP and WIC, as state officials work to ensure benefits reach residents quickly. For now, we have to just wait and see what happens now. Full Story

🎄 Seasonal Jobs—What’s Legit?

The holiday season brings opportunities to earn a little extra—but also a spike in scam activity targeting job seekers. The BBB of Southern Colorado is reminding folks to be cautious when applying for seasonal work. Some scammers are posting fake job listings on legitimate websites, then moving conversations offline to steal personal information.
If you’re searching for a side gig, stick to trusted sources, apply directly on company websites, and watch for red flags like no interview, early requests for sensitive info, or upfront purchases. It’s a season of giving, not grifting—let’s help keep each other safe. Full Story
📚 Ruth Holley Library Lives On

The future of the Ruth Holley Library just became a lot more secure. After once being considered for closure due to leasing costs, the Pikes Peak Library District has completed the purchase of the longtime neighborhood branch for just over $2.2 million. This marks a turning point after the closure of the Rockrimmon Library in late 2024 and reflects PPLD’s ongoing efforts to preserve vital community spaces. Full Story

🥗 Thanksgiving Slaw

Recipe by the kitchn
The idea of serving a big mixed salad at Thanksgiving is, in theory, a good one — you want something light, crunchy, and refreshing to balance out the roast turkey and rich holiday side dishes. The reality…most salads need to be tossed at the last second and eaten quickly before wilting — not the best choice when there’s a lot going on in the kitchen and the food might sit out for a few hours.
This easy, colorful slaw is the answer to this dilemma: It has crunchy cabbage, toasty almonds, sweet cranberries, and a sweet-tangy maple and apple cider vinegar dressing. The slaw won’t wilt like other green salads and can sit out for a while, making it a great addition to the Thanksgiving buffet.
