๐๏ธ Veterans Fighting for Their Historic Home
๐ค The 100-year promise that needs our community to keep it alive
In the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, a century-old building has served as a lifeline for veterans since 1920. The Lieutenant Marion L. Willis VFW Post 101 is more than just a meeting hallโฆit's a sanctuary.
For 453 members, this post represents home. Even those who no longer live in the area maintain their membership because they know this is where they belong whenever they return. As one newer member recently confessed, "This is like my second home. Where I can come when I'm having a rough day, talk to people who've been where I've been, and not be judged."
But this vital refuge is now under threat. The historic building is battling a critical infrastructure failure. The air conditioning has stopped working entirely, which drove away crucial hall rental clients (and revenue) during last summer's heat. Even more concerning, the heating system is rapidly failing. The veterans are currently managing with space heaters, but they are racing to replace the system before it fails completely.
Commander Mindy King, an Army Iraq War veteran, is leading the charge to raise $39,000 by March. If they miss this window, looming regulations will force costs to skyrocket beyond their reach. They have already secured 25% of the funds through various creative fundraising efforts, but they need our community's help.
This isn't just where veterans gather. It's where they've cleaned 270 veteran headstones at Evergreen Cemetery, including those of Civil War soldiers. It's where holiday dinner boxes are assembled for Fort Carson families. It's where veterans struggling with isolation find connection through free coffee meetups, game nights, and art therapy sessions. When an unhoused veteran appears at their door, they offer not just a meal, but belonging.
Please help keep these doors open. You can donate to their newly created nonprofit fundraising campaign via GiveButter or visit VFWPost101.org to learn more about their mission and donate. Also on Facebook.

*While I typically focus on sharing volunteer opportunities that connect you with like-minded community members (which I believe builds stronger bonds than simply writing a check), this situation is truly urgent. If you can contribute toward this $39,000 goal before the March deadline, you'll be preserving not just a historic building, but a vital lifeline for the veterans who've served us all. Of course, you can also support by attending their public events or considering their beautiful banquet hall for your next gathering.
