This Is What Hope Looks Like Freida Rolls Into Joy at the National Mill Dog Rescue

A recent post from National Mill Dog Rescue is touching hearts across the community after sharing an update on Freida, a five-year-old French bulldog who arrived unable to use her back legs. This week, Freida was fitted with a custom wheelchair and almost instantly, her world opened up. She’s now exploring the play areas, chasing balls, spinning with excitement, and doing something she couldn’t before: truly playing.

Her journey is a powerful reminder that healing doesn’t always look like walking again, sometimes it looks like rolling forward with joy, confidence, and a brand-new sense of freedom. And this chapter is just the beginning.

🚧 Hwy 24 Exit Closes - Here’s Why

US Hwy 24 near Peterson Road will notice a permanent traffic change

Drivers who use US Hwy 24 near Peterson Road will notice a permanent traffic change that started yesterday. A slip exit lane closed as crews continue work on a long-term safety project designed to improve traffic flow and access near Peterson Space Force Base. While construction continues through January, drivers should plan for slight delays and follow posted signs for the smoothest route through the area.

Solid Rock Community Development Corp is opening the doors to its new Aquapod Farm in Southeast Colorado Springs

Solid Rock Community Development Corp is opening the doors to its new Aquapod Farm in Southeast Colorado Springs, a year-round aquaponics facility designed to tackle food insecurity with fresh, locally grown produce. Using a sustainable system that pairs fish and plants in a self-cleaning ecosystem, the farm will supply nutritious food directly through the community food center while also creating hands-on learning opportunities, volunteer pathways, and local jobs.

The grand opening celebration on Jan 10, 11am-2pm, invites the community to tour the farm, enjoy hot cocoa, win prizes, and take home one of 700 free heads of lettuce, marking a powerful step forward in building healthier, more resilient neighborhoods.

πŸ₯ TRIVIA: How Did A Church Hospital Become A City Landmark?

Beth El Hospital 1913-1915

Beth El Hospital 1913-1915

Did you know Colorado Springs’ first real city hospital began not with a government plan, but with a handful of local church women who were simply tired of watching their neighbors suffer? In 1904, members of the Woman’s Home Missionary Society at First Methodist Episcopal Church looked around a fast‑growing town and saw miners, families, and churchgoers getting sick with no dedicated hospital to turn to. They scraped together support to convert an old sanatorium at South Institute and East Colorado into a small, faith‑driven hospital where deaconess nurses lived upstairs, worked downstairs, and cared for anyone who came through the doors.

When the City of Colorado Springs bought Beth‑El Hospital in 1943, what new name did it give the hospital, and why?

Just a few years later, the community doubled down on that vision. With land donated by city founder General William Jackson Palmer, Colorado Springs residents backed the construction of a modern brick facility at 1400 E Boulder St, renamed Beth‑El, β€œHouse of God.” It stood on level ground instead of a windswept hill and soon became the place where local nurses trained, babies were born, and epidemic patients were treated, anchoring an east‑side neighborhood that many of your readers still drive past every week.

Over time, Beth‑El grew into Memorial Hospital and its nursing program evolved into today’s Johnson Beth‑El College of Nursing and Health Sciences at UCCS, meaning the nurses caring for Colorado Springs patients now are part of the same story that started with those determined women in 1904.

Answer: In 1943 the city renamed it β€œMemorial Hospital” to honor the men and women who were killed in World War II. *Source
