🐺 Heeding the Call: How ColoradoWild Heals the Divide

🤝 Where Ecology Meets Economy in Perfect Harmony

In the mountains and valleys of Colorado, a quiet revolution is taking place. As wolves return to their ancestral home after decades of absence, the team at ColoradoWild, including ecologist Rebecca "Becca Sue" Burkhalter, are changing how we think about wildlife and ranching.

The story isn't playing out in Colorado Springs backyards, but its effects ripple through the entire state's ecosystem. When wolves disappeared from Colorado's landscape, something unexpected happened: without these apex predators, elk populations exploded. These elk overgrazed riverbank vegetation, leading to eroding shorelines, declining beaver populations, and deteriorating waterways.

This phenomenon, known as a trophic cascade, reveals an essential truth they share in their workshops: healthy ecosystems need all their parts, including predators.

But their approach goes beyond ecological science. They understand that for wolves to successfully reestablish in Colorado, they need to address ranchers' legitimate concerns about livestock protection. Instead of deepening the urban-rural divide with accusatory rhetoric, Becca Sue and her colleagues offer practical solutions.

Their toolkit includes non-lethal deterrents like specialized lighting systems that keep wolves away from cattle, range riders who patrol grazing lands, and strategic fencing. Ranches implementing these methods have seen dramatic reductions in livestock losses compared to traditional lethal control methods.

The data tells a powerful story: wolves rarely go after livestock and coexistence isn't just possible, it's profitable. Ranches working with ColoradoWild protect their bottom line while contributing to healthier forests, cleaner rivers, and more resilient ecosystems.

ColoradoWild isn't asking you to choose between supporting ranching heritage or environmental restoration. Their message is simple: by working together, we can have both thriving livestock operations and wild, healthy landscapes complete with wolves.
