The slowdown was largely tied to rising mortgage rates that reduced housing sales and construction activity, cutting monthly job growth from around 800 jobs in 2022–2023 to about 100 jobs recently.

⚠️ Food Safety Concerns + a Perfect Score

Every week, El Paso County Public Health releases inspection reports for local restaurants. Most businesses pass with few issues, but occasionally a location requires a follow-up visit to correct food safety concerns.

Here's a breakdown of the most recent health inspections:

Tucanos Brazilian Grill, failed...re-inspection needed

🚫 Forced to Close

Pho Express #1 (no change from last week)

📍 5697 Barnes Rd Ste 110
Result: Still Closed (Inspection Date: Feb. 26, 2026)
16 Violations, worst concerns (quick summary):

  • Pest issues reported (cockroaches + traps heavily loaded)

  • High-risk cross-contamination (raw meats handled, then veggies; raw stored above ready-to-eat foods)

  • Unsafe food temps (hot holding too low; cold items far above safe range)

  • Poor handwashing/glove habits (gloves used across tasks; improper washing)
