👀 National Eyes on Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs has received $2.3 million in federal funding through the Department of Homeland Security’s Urban Area Security Initiative—a first for our city. The grant will be managed through the Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management and aims to help high-risk cities improve planning, coordination, training, and response in the face of potential terrorist threats.
This recognition highlights the growing national significance of our region and ensures local agencies—from law enforcement to emergency response—have the tools and resources to work together seamlessly. The grant helps boost both safety and confidence, not just for residents but also for those who visit the Pikes Peak region. Full Story

🥫 Library Launches Food Drive
Food insecurity affects about 1 in 8 families in El Paso County, (with the government shutdown lasting so long, the need is even more serious) and the Pikes Peak Library District is stepping up to help. Partnering with Care and Share Food Bank, the library system is hosting the PPLD Cares food drive through Dec 15. All library branches are accepting donations of non-perishable items—like canned veggies, peanut butter, and boxed dinners—that will go directly to neighbors in need this holiday season. It’s a simple, powerful way to make a difference, one pantry item at a time.

💙 Honoring Veterans - Flags Fill Downtown Streets

Downtown Colorado Springs is filled with red, white, and blue as 1,111 American flags have been installed to recognize veterans across our community. The number symbolizes Veterans Day—11/11—and each flag serves as a tribute to the courage and service of those who’ve worn the uniform. The display stretches along N Nevada and N Cascade Avenues and was created by volunteers from Peterson Space Force Base and O’Donnell and O’Donnell.
Community members can adopt a flag for $25, with proceeds supporting this year’s Veterans Day parade. Each adopted flag can be tagged with the name, branch, and service details of your honoree, adding a personal touch to this powerful public tribute. Full Story

🎖 Trivia Time: From Spontaneous Cheers to Citywide Parade

Armistice Day parade early 1918
Did you know that Colorado Springs’ first celebrations honoring veterans date back to Nov 11, 1918—when news of the World War I Armistice swept the city? As word spread about peace on, downtown Colorado Springs filled with jubilant, impromptu parades, ringing bells, and military bands as local families gathered to cheer returning soldiers and remember those lost.
What is the significance of the date and time November 11 at 11am in world and local history?
By 1919 and into the 1920s, these spontaneous street celebrations evolved into annual Armistice Day parades along Tejon, eagerly embraced by residents, veterans, and schoolchildren. For generations, these parades marked one of the city’s proudest and most unifying traditions, with floats honoring both the living and the fallen, and community groups marching in shared remembrance.
Though the official nonprofit Veterans Day Parade as we know it was established in 2000, the soul of today’s festivities lives in those earliest gatherings. The tradition reflects a century-old commitment by Colorado Springs to honor service and sacrifice—a history stitched into the city’s identity each November.
Answer: Nov 11 marks when the armistice ending World War I officially took effect in 1918. It was signed at 5:45 a.m., but orders sent across the Western Front set the cessation of hostilities for exactly 11am on Nov 11. This “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” became the symbol of hope and relief for millions across the globe. *Source
