🎁 Unwrapping it feels like welcoming your loved one home
There's a moment that happens when someone opens the perfect gift. The room goes quiet. Their eyes fill before they can say a single word, because looking back at them is a hand-painted, familiar face, every whisker and soft patch of fur rendered in watercolor so tender it almost breathes. The dog who waited for you by the door every night. The cat who curled into your lap and purred so loudly you could feel it in your chest.
That moment is Beth Orehosky's favorite part of her watercolor creations.
Raised in Atlanta and classically trained at the University of Georgia, Beth spent years as an elementary school art teacher, helping small hands discover something beautiful inside themselves. Then, during Covid, she did something braver than most of us ever will. She sold her home, moved into a camper van, and chased rivers and watercolor across the country with her dog Veda by her side, before finally landing in Colorado Springs.
What she does now is turn our fur babies into keepsake art. Through River Melon Watercolors, Beth creates custom pet portraits from a client's favorite photo, each one sealed, mounted onto a wood panel, and finished with protective wax. No glass, no glare, ready to hang the moment it's unwrapped. Clients can choose soft, natural tones or her signature rainbow style, which transforms a solid-black pup or plain-white kitty into a burst of color that stops you in the hallway. Because some loves deserve more than a photograph.
Many of the portraits Beth paints honor pets who've already crossed the Rainbow Bridge and having recently said goodbye to her own soul dog, she carries every one of those commissions with the kind of care that only comes from understanding the ache firsthand. It's why her clients so often cry when the final image arrives. It isn't just a painting, It's a visit.
*Ironically, I'm writing this on the same day I say goodbye to my own 17-year-old cat, Gandalf (the beige). Some stories find you right when you need them.
