✨ A Mother's Quest: Creating Magic from a Child's Isolation
🏰 From Books to Battles: Dana Creates Local Fantasy World Where All Kids Belong
What if there was a place where shy and neurodivergent kids, along with others seeking a sense of belonging, could blossom into confident heroes? Guess what, on the westside of Colorado Springs, this place does exist: the Explorers Creativity Club, founded by Dana Susan Beasley. Children aged 11-17 find adventure and acceptance here.
Inspired by her autistic son, Sam, Dana blended her passions for history, faith, and creative arts to develop this live-action role-playing (LARP) program. Witnessing Sam retreat into the digital world, Dana designed the club specifically for children like him.
"We're the island of misfit toys," Dana warmly explains. "These kids might not fit traditional programs, but here, they truly shine."
Medieval tales come alive through sword battles, crafting, and imaginative games. This year, children explore the legends of King Arthur and King Alfred, discover the Armor of God, and forge friendships in a supportive, faith-based community.
Sam, using his own autism experience, helps Dana design engaging activities including sword fighting instruction. He's a vital part of the team. Dana's husband, Travis, also contributes, especially during knighting ceremonies.
The club's impact is profound. Lucas, always enthusiastic, has grown into a dedicated leader, running games and inspiring others. Seeing Sam and Lucas collaborate brings a smile to Dana's face. "These are the moments that remind me why we started this adventure in the first place," she shares. Sam, once withdrawn, now flourishes.
The Explorers Creativity Club meets on the first and third Thursdays at Living Hope Church, with monthly Saturday sessions at the Beasleys' westside home. The spring session ends with a special Knighting Ceremony. They will have a summer camp at the church June 24-26.
Do you know a young person who could thrive here? Share this opportunity with their family. Website or contact Dana at (719) 964-2336, [email protected] or visit her Facebook page to reserve your spot for a free trial session.
